Dukkan Careem

Now that we’ve officially launched, I have had a lot of people ask me, “but what’s a car booking app doing entering the retail market, anyway? What does this mean for Careem?”
While it could seem unexpected to a few, it’s a step in the right direction for Careem as a platform and as a brand. We’re proud and humbled to have launched Dukkan Careem – our first venture into retail and one of the many initiatives towards being the largest mover of people and things by 2020 and here are a few reasons why:
Careem’s mission is to simplify and improve the lives of people, and one of the ways to do this is by empowering our communities. Similar to how we have created opportunities for Captains throughout the region to earn a living and support their families, we want to support the boldest creators in our region. There is an incredible amount of creative talent in our region, but it has not always had respect and opportunities. Dukkan Careem is our attempt to change that.
Secondly, Dukkan Careem will allow the region’s boldest creators, customers, and colleagues to benefit from Careem’s reach and logistics capabilities. Here’s a brand people know and love, and we wanted to bring this into the lives of people through tangible products. We have over 15 million people on our platform and many of them engage with us on a daily basis. Similarly, there are over one million Captains in our region that can become the logistics backbone for distributing these goods. We have the talent, knowledge and on the ground network to venture into new areas of business that can help utilise and maximize our resources.
Let’s add to this the fact that we are 100 percent local – this means locally sourced materials with culturally-inspired designs that are produced in cities that Careem operates in. Dukkan aims to fuel back into the economy and help create more job opportunities.
Lastly, Dukkan Careem will also serve as a reference for Careem’s logistics capabilities as we expand from the movement of people, to using the infrastructure we have built to attain the movement of things. Over the next few months, you will start seeing on-demand deliveries of items that you order on Dukkan Careem.
For those of you also wondering about how the name came to be, ‘Dukkan’ means ‘shop’ in Arabic, Turkish and Urdu – and what better way to describe our online store? It’s something we can all relate to being from this region, a constant reminder of our roots and more humbling times, so that we never forget where we come from.
Thank you for supporting local and we can’t wait to see you at www.dukkancareem.com
